Writing
When I was in Grade 5, I joined a sort of writing test to see if anyone in our class could be included in the school paper that was just being created. I wrote something about the environment and the importance of protecting it, and I thought I was being clever and profound by ending it with “What do you think?” I’m still convinced that that’s what got me into the school paper.
A year later, I declared in my Grade 6 yearbook entry that I wanted to be a journalist. I even chose journalism when I was filling up my application form for UP. I didn’t make it, getting accepted into speech pathology instead before transferring to history, which I absolutely loved.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, and reading magazines like YM and Seventeen from the US and Philippine publications like Mr. & Ms., Woman Today, and Teen Magazine (please please send me a scan of a copy if anyone has it) made me dream of someday writing or working for a magazine. Which was why I jumped at the chance to apply for a job at Summit Media after graduating from college. I worked as a website manager for a women’s website but thankfully had the opportunity to write for several publications.
I’ve mostly written for Summit, but I’ve also been a ghostwriter and written press releases, web content, and search engine-optimized content. Writing has actually taken a backseat to editing and proofreading these days, but I do have some newer pieces; my work will appear in a soon-to-be-released book about Filipino toy designer Quiccs and in an upcoming anthology about Philippine pop culture and the pandemic. Any other writing I do is for my blog, my sustainable living blog Green Unlimited, my Quezon City-focused blog QCitizen, and my YouTube channel late-night chips; would love it if you could watch and subscribe.
